The Norman, Oklahoma band is no stranger to catchy, quirky pop, but Drowaton (Dig)--on respected indie Barsuk (Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley)--surpasses anything they’ve come up with yet. For instance, “Inside of Me”, an Internet-only pre-release, combines piano, female backup vocals and spy movie guitar, heralding a third album of bizarre yet tuneful mutant pop.

With their first two albums, Starlight Mints were praised for their ability to combine familiar pop music tropes with experimentation and orchestration to create enjoyable and refreshingly interesting songs” (according to pitchfork.com). The group’s four oddballs, raised on a diet of AM radio and archetypal pop, mix sweet, guilty-pleasure-sounding music, slightly-goofy sounding vocals and charming, innocent lyrics to form a sound that sounds a bit strange, but states that primeval lust for music that is important in our life behind only food, sex and ice-cube making. Call it “bubblegum psychedelia” or “orchestrated, catchy surrealism”—it’s some of the most fun, feel-weird pop to come down the pike in ages.

(Malos), the second album from Dios Malos, has earned the Hawthorne, California-based indie-pop band comparisons to Super Furry Animals, Grandaddy, the Shins and the Radar Brothers. The group’s pop sensibilities are filtered through yacht-rock ethos at times which add up to genre-morphing exercises that quietly hook the listener until the disc becomes essential, two- or three-times-a-day listening. Live, Dios Malos is captivatingly upbeat and colourfully antic.

Biography by Betsy Boyd

Candy-coated mod quintet the Starlight Mints sprouted through the ground in Norman, OK — the same home state as the equally oddball dream pop band Flaming Lips. Starlight Mints — vocalist/guitarist Allan Vest, keyboardist Marian Love Nunez, bassist Javier Gonzales, drummer Andy Nunez, and guitarist Matt Goad — began jamming together in the '90s as a seven-person band complete with orchestra, giving birth to their own funky brand of heavily instrumental — think cello, violin, triangle, and sound effects — surrealistically worded pop sound. Vest's nasally yet skillful voice is like a cross between Pixie legend Frank Black's tenor and Violent Femmes frontman Gordon Gano's cracking throat. The band's first album, The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of, was released in 2000. The record reflects numerous influences from the '60s forward. Built on Squares followed three years later. For 2006's Drowaton, the Starlight Mints signed with Barsuk. Show dates with Dios Malos and Octopus Project followed into June.
